                        Learning Objectives:
                        • To be able to make comparisons between their lives and those of children in a [developing] country
                        • To develop and understanding of what it may be like for a child to live in poverty.

                        Lesson
                        Introduction
                        (15 minutes):
                        • Look at a world map and identify the continent of Africa. Locate Kenya and its capital city, Nairobi
                        • Discuss aspects of the assembly and what we understand about poverty, and life in a slum.  Link our thoughts to events, such as ‘Live Aid’ and ‘Make Poverty History’.  Did any of the class get involved in anyway?
                        • If the film clip of the Kibera has not yet been shown it may be helpful to introduce this now.

Activity:Explain that the class is going to make comparisons between their lives and those of a child living in the Kibera.
Discuss obvious differences from watching the film clip and introduce the photo pack.
You may decide to divide the class into small groups and devise a comparisons sheet or poster.  Areas to compare may include:

                        1.  Food
                        1. Homes
                        2. Facilities e.g. shops, hospitals, schools
                        3. Leisure, games and toys
                        4. Sanitation
Children look through the photo pack or their individual photo and note down differences.

                        Plenary:

Each group feeds back to the class and explains the various differences they may have discovered.  The teacher may elaborate on the children’s findings by using the Fact Sheets.
Extension:Produce a display:  Children write or type up their findings and comparisons, and stick on to a map of the Kibera or a map of Kenya.
Produce a poster:  Use I.C.T. to create a poster explaining about life in the Kibera and problems children face.  Explain also how we can help by funding a lunch programme.
