Lesson
Introduction
(15 minutes):
Activity:Explain that the class is going to make comparisons between their lives and those of a child living in the Kibera.
Discuss obvious differences from watching the film clip and introduce the photo pack.
You may decide to divide the class into small groups and devise a comparisons sheet or poster. Areas to compare may include:
1. Food
Plenary:
Each group feeds back to the class and explains the various differences they may have discovered. The teacher may elaborate on the children’s findings by using the Fact Sheets.
Extension:Produce a display: Children write or type up their findings and comparisons, and stick on to a map of the Kibera or a map of Kenya.
Produce a poster: Use I.C.T. to create a poster explaining about life in the Kibera and problems children face. Explain also how we can help by funding a lunch programme.

Lesson
Introduction
(15 minutes):
- Look at a world map and identify the continent of Africa. Locate Kenya and its capital city, Nairobi
- Discuss aspects of the assembly and what we understand about poverty, and life in a slum. Link our thoughts to events, such as ‘Live Aid’ and ‘Make Poverty History’. Did any of the class get involved in anyway?
- If the film clip of the Kibera has not yet been shown it may be helpful to introduce this now.
