Introduction
(5 minutes):
Show the children the photographs (H and I) of the ‘Lunch Bowl’ project. Tell the children that the Lunch Bowl project takes place in Africa. (Use map if appropriate).
Does anyone know anything about Africa?
Activity:Hold up a child’s lunch box
Q. Would you like to see what’s inside?
Invite the children to guess what might be inside. Open the lunch box. Inside it has nothing but any empty food bowl.
Q. It’s empty – why?
Listen to the children’s ideas, then explain the Lunch Bowl children’s situation. Refer back to assembly if appropriate.
Q. What could we put in this child’s Lunch Bowl?
Brainstorm ideas.
Show the children a large display bowl and ask them if they would like to help fill it.
Children colour and cut out pictures of food ready to put into the large display Lunch Bowl.
Plenary
(10 mins):
Show the children the Lunch Bowl collection envelopes; explain how they are to be used. Tell the children that when they bring in their Lunch Bowl envelopes the next day they can put an item of food from the display board into the lunch bowl. Encourage them to try to fill the lunch bowl up.
(If appropriate, invite the children to join in a prayer of thanks for the food they have).
Extension:Choose an African theme to focus on.
A/ African Animals
Make a list of African animals. Choose an animal and make a mask. Do an African animal parade (sing or chant ‘let’s go on a safari’)
B/ African Fruit
Make a list of different exotic fruits (book ‘Handa’s Surprise). Use fruits to make a fruit salad. Talk about different shapes/sizes/colours/textures/seeds etc.
C/ African Cooking
Cook a traditional African meal with the children. Eat the meal in traditional style – sitting on the floor, eat with fingers. Tell a traditional folk tale while they eat.
D/ African Songs and Music
Play a piece of traditional African music. Talk about the sound/rhythm of the piece. Look at African instruments. Learn a simple song.
